Job Overview
Location: Oakville, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-storey house with attached garage
Problem: Squirrel activity reported in attic and on roof
Service: Squirrel removal and roof vent exclusion
Visits: Two
Summary
We were called to address early-morning wildlife noise coming from the attic of a detached residential home. Our inspection confirmed squirrel activity entering through roof vent openings. Humane one-way exclusion and permanent vent protection were installed, followed by a return visit to complete sealing and confirm resolution.
Background / Property Context
The property is a detached two-storey home with an asphalt shingle roof and multiple roof penetrations, including standard plastic roof vents. These features are common entry points for squirrels, particularly during warmer months when roof access is unobstructed.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported repeated scratching and movement noises in the attic during early morning hours, along with visible squirrel activity on the roof surface.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial exterior roof inspection, our technician Nathaniel identified damage consistent with squirrel chewing at a roof vent. The vent cover showed an opening along the lower edge, creating direct access into the attic space. Additional roof vents were assessed as potential secondary entry points due to similar construction and exposure.
Photos show:
- A roof vent with visible chew damage along the lower edge
- Open gaps beneath vent covers allowing attic access
- Overall roof layout and vent placement prior to exclusion work

Cause Analysis
Plastic roof vents can be vulnerable to wildlife damage, as squirrels are capable of chewing through softened or weathered materials. Elevated rooflines provide safe access, and attic spaces offer warmth and shelter. Once an initial breach occurs, repeated use of the same entry point is common.
Treatment / Removal
A humane, non-lethal squirrel removal process was implemented. One-way doors were installed over the identified active roof vent entry points, allowing squirrels to exit the attic while preventing re-entry. This approach ensures animals leave on their own without becoming trapped inside.
Two squirrel one-way doors were installed during the first visit.

Exclusion & Repairs
To prevent future access, three roof vents were reinforced with galvanized steel vent covers. These covers were mechanically secured and fitted to maintain proper ventilation while eliminating chew-through risk.

Photos show:
- One-way doors installed over roof vents
- Galvanized steel vent covers secured over vulnerable openings
- Mesh exclusion fitted flush to the roof surface
Outcome & Confirmation
On the second visit, the homeowner reported no further wildlife activity. All one-way doors were removed, sealed openings were inspected, and roof vent exclusions were confirmed secure. No additional signs of squirrel presence were observed, and the attic remained inactive following completion.

Technician Notes
- Full exterior roof inspection completed on initial visit
- Primary squirrel entry confirmed at damaged roof vent
- Humane exclusion performed using one-way doors
- All identified roof vent vulnerabilities permanently protected
- Final visit confirmed successful removal and exclusion
